  1. It appears to me that she has already completed her first four years of post-secondary education.
  2. what she said
  3. Thanks.....my problem was related to a Vipre beta version that was causing various problems with my system (not just ATX). I uninstalled the beta update and went back to prior version and everything works better...including ATX.
  4. I also still have one client e-filed return on 1/31.....status on IRS site still states the same thing...return received and is being processed. EIC so I was not surprised at the delay...but all other EIC returns sent after that have been processed and refunds received
  5. I had AOC on my personal return...got in in 10 days.
  6. Chicago....One of my favorite places....just not it the winter.
  7. Is anyone else here using Vipre Internet security? I am wondering if that is not part of my problem with ATX 2012....I normally shut down the Vipre program, but as a security feature, it will not allow you to stop the main process running in the background. wondering if this is conflicitng with ATX 2012
  8. Ignore my comment above....same problem still exists....on one client it worked great as I mentioned above...but on all clients since then, its back to the same old screwed up letter.
  9. Stand-alone XP system. installed a rather painless and quick update to 12.10. No issues. program and returns now open slightly faster, but still noticeably slower than 2011. One HUGE improvement (at least for me) is the improvement of the client letters....specifically an issue where if OH state and OH school were e-filed and OH local was mailed, the Federal Letter refused to see the OH local as mailed...instead, it would insist the OH local was being e-filed. Since there is no e-file form for OH local, the Federal letter would print an error message instead of telling clients where to mail the OH local return. The only option was to delete the OH local letter to remove the error message. This issue has been resolved with 12.10 I hesitate to say this...and knock on wood as I do...but at least for me....this program is getting better.
  10. What is the daily per diem rate for OTR truck drivers for 2012?
  11. If she puts the money into an IRA, she would get a deduction for that, but still have to pay taxes and penalty on what she withdrew...correct?
  12. Client withdrew money from her 401k twice during 2012. $10,000 in August then another $10,000 in December. She heard from a friend that if she would deposit that withdrawn money within 60 days from withdraw date, she would NOT have to pay taxes or penalty on the withdraw. Is there any truth to this? These were not loans from her 401k...they were withdrawals. If there is truth to what she heard it is a mute point for the August withdrawal, but the December wthdrawal was on 12/31/12....So she thinks she has until 03/02 to deposit the last $10,000.00. Has anybody heard of this?
  13. OK...I humbly admit to knowing NOTHING about the OIC program...Never had reason. Before I dig into this at the request of a client, Can anybody tell me up front....is this something that can help a low income single taxpayer reduce their amount they owe IRS Client quit her job early in 2012 to run away with "Mr. Right" who was going to take care of her and treat her like a princess. Surprise! That did not work out so well....So to get by, now-unemployed client withdrew a bunch of money from her 401k to live on....so now my still unemployed client owes several thousand to IRS (as well as state and local). Is it worth looking into OIC for her?
  14. I just updated from 12.7 to 12.9 due to the need to e-file 4852. I was hoping that maybe the crash/slow opening would improve with 10.9....nope. I knew that 2 gig of RAM was minimum, so I doubled to 4 gig....All I found was that the more RAM you have, the more RAM Loader.exe uses.
  15. I am sooo sorry Joanmcq......remember the good times and take solice in knowing that the little kitty has no more pain or problems....he will always hold a happy place in your heart.
  16. This made me smile
  17. Client starts working for an insurance company as a W-2 employee. Company makes client pay for EVERYTHING....postage, travel expenses, office supplies, fees, testing, licensing. The company also has a mandatory dress code of suit & tie. "but don't worry" the company tells the employee....."its all deductible on your tax return". obviously some expenses are not deductible at all (new suits), but even the ones that are deductible (after 2% floor) when added to very little other Sch A deductions would never total as much or more than the clients standard deduction... I hate it when people give out reckless/careless tax advice to those that trust/respect them. another unhappy client I am forced to deal with already sick of taxes this season.
  18. I'm hoping to hold off until 12.10 is released...and only then if the reviews are good.
  19. My Smokey is approx 15 years (not sure because adopted her as a stray 11+ years ago)...has had some teeth removed and is now having kidney issues. I just appreciate what time I do have left with her and hope that she has many more years. When she she does leave my life in body (never spirit), it is gonna hurt...a lot.
  20. wow....that hurt my eyes
  21. I have had 4 of these "out-on-their-own" students this year.....3 did not qualify for the refundable portion. I had another that did qualify because she was part-time and not full-time. The under age 24 rules really seem unfair (and really confusing)....but it is what it is. IRS is stupid
  22. I'm still on 12.7.....slow and crashed occasional....and annoying issues with client letters, but functional. I am afraid to update. Later next week when I need to e-file some returns with 4562, I need to do it.
  23. Thanks RitaB! I glanced at the 8815 late last night and quickly realized that there was a little more to it than I thought....I'll tackle it later when I can devote more time to it. The first thing I saw noticed that I need to have the face value of the bonds....not just the interest. This particular client only gave me the 1099-INT that lists the interest but not face value......As usual, more info needed from client.
  24. I love technology....now clients can mail me stuff, call me (home or cell), text me, e-mail me, facebook message me, and come to my door....and my personal favorite....stop me at the grocery store and hand me some tax papers that they have crumpled up at the bottom of their purse....including the sticky stuff, whatever the hell that is. I'm ready to go "off the grid" for a while.
  25. Well I did not actually see any bonds, but the statement from the bank showing face value and interest as well as the 1099-INT all have ONLY the student's name and SSN. So I am pretty sure on this one that nobody can exclude the interest. However, my next client (mom who purchased bonds many years ago and has redeemed them to help pay for daughter's college) will qualify......with the twist that she is using education expenses for the AOC. So my questions can a portion of the qual. education expenses be used to get the max AOC, then the remainder of education expenses be used to exempt the EE savings bond interest?
