Happy Birthday to All and to all...take the day off!
-
Lion, I like your new picture.

Happy birthday! :spaz:
-
Actually, I don't think you will be able to e-file because you will not have a PTIN.
-
Happy Birthday! How does it feel to be 21 again? Mike
-
What is the 800 to call about the PTIN?
-
I have a receipt for the paid fee, however, no letter for granting of the PTIN and am unable to confirm at the IRS web site. I may not be in the right place to confirm however. If there is a URL I could use, than at least I would know I am at the right place. BTW, My charge was processed 28 September. Does anybody have an idea what this means?
-
Charge showed up today. I thought I might have entered the expiration date or something incorrectly. Thanks for your response. Hope it all goes will with your registration.
-
I noticed that the charge has not come through yet for the application fee for the new PTIN. I registered the first day you could. Should the charge have been posted yet?
-
Did you check your Spam folder? That is where I found my password.
-
I just finished my registration process with no problems. My application number is 6113. What is your number. Let's see who has the lowest number.

I can't speak for anyone else, however, if Matt's last posting is a reflection of the employees at Fail Safe I would never go there. -
He probably didn't asl for the wrong thing, he just didn't now what else he could ask for.

Would like info on receiving faxes on the Internet/email
MAMalody replied to Denne's topic in General Chat
I use TrustFax by Comodo Communications. I have an 800 number through them for this which is great because my business is internet based and I have not seen a client in 7 years. With doing returns in 18 states it is no cost to the sender and all my faxes end up as .pdf files which I can file in my computer or delete. Saves paper, filing time, shredding time, lost docs, etc. Works great for me. I do some traveling and it also allows me to work wherever I am and to send or receive docs whereever I am. With this outfit, you buy so many pages at a time. I would have to check but I buy 1400 or so pages at a time for $90-100. I did not exceed that number during the filing season - part of the reason in most of my clients scan there docs in and e-mail them to me. -
Pub 527 page 17 seems to agree with the % allocation method.

That is probably because you didn't go to Banbury in Eagle:>) Sorry, I couldn't resist.

<<<6. There should be a way to print the Form 8879 WITH the DCN on it before we create the e-file, so that the copy the client signs has the DCN on it. I refuse to create the e-file until I have the Form 8879 signed in case there are any changes to the return, and so that I don't somehow accidently send the e-file before I get the authorization.>>> I kind of like this feature. I like the error check that goes with it and since all my clients are internet based, sometimes it picks up something that I need from the client that I can't e-file without. Since you can't e-file the return without selecting it for filing, this has not been a problem for me. In fact, if you open and close the return after creating the e-file the return is rejected on the e-file tab and cannot be e-filed. To be honest, though, I must admit that I accidentially filed a return a couple of years ago because I created the file prior to receiving the F8879 from the client.

Old Jack: There is no reason to refer to another tax preparer just because I think he has a not-for-profit rental. First, it was a self-prepared return and he made his own determination. Second, even if it was professionally prepared, the fact that I would disagree with another preparer does not make me wrong and him right, or for that matter the other way around. It simply means that I fully research my determination and show/explain that to the client, assuming that research supports my preliminary determination. Taxbilly: Jeez, I don't know why I forgot that a not-for-profit was not reported on a Schedule E. I simply took his data and entered in in my program and upon getting some additional data and information made the not-for-profit determination. Since ATX already had the E set up, it must have locked in my thinking. I will have to review all the info to make sure I am on the right track and nothing else is "locked in." Thanks for the time, folks.

I have a client who has a "rental." I have determined it is not for profit, therefore not able to take a loss. I can't figure out how to do that in the ATX program. Anybody have this figured out?

In my opinion, she is not a statutory employee until she is licensed to sell insurance. Until then she would be a commonlaw employee subject to all the employment taxes. Review the 20 criteria, does she set her own hours, does she have to do the work, etc. Seems to me I saw a MSSP on this, you may want to check the IRS web site.

I did some work for a company called TaxLogic back in the late 90's. Part of it involved answering questions on a chat room at a specified time each week. I believe the chat room was active once a week from7-8 or 9 once a week. I think the room would hold 25 and we would answer any tax question that anybody wanted to pose to us. There were usually 3-5 people answering questions and the others rotated in and out. The room usually had no less that 15 or so at any one time. For the public it was a good tool. We did get a professional every now and then. I think it is a good idea, but probably only at specified times.

This is a new one on me. I have a client on extensions. In reviewing his Tax organizer I found the following entry: Massages for Fibromyalgia (per Dr. RX)$1355. His prior year return showed a deduction for this expense. What say you?
-
Client has a small amount of unearned income, his wife has nontaxable disability income and his house is provied by the church.
-
Here's what happened. Client has no w-2, Schedule C, E or F, no partnerships or any recordable source of earned income. He is a pastor and does receive the housing allowance. Return was rejected because of no earned income. Tried putting earned income on line 7 of 1040 and backing out on line 21. Return rejected same reason. Called E-file help desk. They looked at return and said have no clue, we will get back to you. They called me yesterday and said we have no idea what to do, this would require special handling so it would be best for client to paper file. I asked what the problem was and they said they weren't set to handle this situation and could find nothing wrong with the return. Told client to paper file return. Jeez, now I have to take the time (maybe) to mention this to ATX hoping they will bring it up to IRS because person on phone could not seem to grasp that she needed to let her supervisor know of this problem. Just thought I would let you now. For those who want to know, the code/regs do indicate that if you have income on line 2 of SE that you can use that for EIC computations.
