Hi; I'm working on clients Sub-S, and he went to Israel for 6 months and did business there. He had to pay Israel taxes for the income. Do I deduct this expense in full under taxes & licenses, or is only part deductible. Unsure how to deduct this tax paid. Appreciate your help. Bardon

Hi all; I just want to verify that what I'm reading is correct. Attached is text from Publication 915, which states as follows: "CANADIAN OR GERMAN SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS PAID TO U.S. RESIDENTS. Under income tax treaties with Canada and Germany, social security benefits paid by those countries to U.S. residents are treated for U.S. income tax purposes as if they were paid under the social security legislation of the United States. If you receive social security benefits from Canada or Germany, include them on line 1 of Worksheet 1, shown later" The way I read this is that Canadian social security gets treated the same as US social security, and is taxable at the max of 85%. As mentioned above, line 1 of worksheet 1 is where social security benefits are reported. Thanks, Bardon

I also bought a new laptop this year, with vista for business, and I loaded ATX from 2002 to present. used the clients I backed up to install to each year. No problems at all. Except for year 2007. That's another story. Bardon719

Happy New Year all! Has anyone had a problem that there is no paid preparer? When I go to the preparer manager it is blank. I have input all the info as paid preparer. The preparer manager does reflect the preparer name. In preparer manager, although it shows 2 of 2 preparers, the names, or firm, etc are blank. (the 2 preparers are, one is blank, and the second is my name.) When I open a new tax form, (1040) the preparer info reflects on the bottom of page 2, but none goes on payroll tax forms, federal or state??? Is there a fix for this. Thanks for your help. Bardon719

Has the IRS approved filing of computer generated 1099's and 1096 yet? or do we still have to file copy A, 1099 and 1096 on a "red" form? From what I read, substitute forms are approved??? (see pub. 1179) Thanks for your input. Don Bardon719

Just received a call from a client who had not filed returns for 1996,1997,1998, and the IRS wants to charge her tax on the full amount of income. and she claims she had plenty of deductions. Since I've thrown my old tax programs away from those years, (who knew?), I was wondering if anyone had these programs that I may be able to get a copy of? Thanks in advance. Bardon

I tried to get into MYATX, and discovered I needed a password. After unsuccessfully trying to log in, I was LOCKED out. I called ATX support, and they told me to use my activation code as password. While they were on the phone, I input the activation code and it still didn't work. The tech support person quoted me a completely different activation code then is showing on the confirmation slip sent with my 2007 tax program????? I installed the program using the code from the confirmation slip. When I went into MYATX and looked up my activation code, it shows as what the tech support person stated. What has happened to ATX since CCH took over?? Bardon719

Hey guys, thanks for all your replies. The program was copied to my hard drive, and we tried to install from there on Friday, but it didn't work. Zach from Tech support was supposed to call me back on Monday, Dec. 3, but nobody called me thru today, but, guess what? I tried again to install from the copy on my hard drive and eureka, it worked. Even though I receive additional CD's during the year, I will continue to update the program by downloading from ATX. I don't want this to happen again. Bardon719

I received my new 2007 program, which I loaded fine with Windows XP in my desktop, but it refuses to load in my new laptop with Vista Business. I was on the phone with ATX for hours Friday, but as yet they are unable to get the program installed on my laptop. They will call me back on Monday after they do some checking? Did anyone else run into this problem? I've loaded 2003 thru 2006 on my new laptop with no difficulty. I even tried installing the program in "Safe Mode", to no avail. Any advice?? Thanks, Don Bardon719

6. Windows XP Professional 32bit, as ATX prior to 2005 won't run on VISTA Not true! I just purchased a new laptop with Vista Business, and I loaded all info from 2004 thru 2006. ATX states they will not support 2004 on Vista, but since it's loaded, I have no problems. Don W -
see attached: Is this discrimination? Taxpayers, Tax Professionals with TurboTax Problems Have Until Midnight April 19 to e-file IR-2007-91, April 18, 2007 WASHINGTON — Taxpayers who were unable to e-file their tax returns Tuesday using Intuit Inc. software products have until midnight on Thursday, April 19, to file their returns, the Internal Revenue Service announced Wednesday. Potentially up to several hundred thousand last-minute tax filers were affected by company server problems on Tuesday evening, and they or their accountants may have been unable to electronically file returns. Intuit confirmed Wednesday that those problems had been resolved, and it was successfully accepting e-file returns on Wednesday. The company said affected taxpayers and tax professionals include those using “TurboTax,” “ProSeries,” “Lacerte” and Intuit’s Free File offering,“TurboTax Freedom.” Intuit product users who were unable to file their returns through the company’s servers Tuesday should e-file as soon as possible. The IRS will not apply late filing penalties to taxpayers who were affected by this problem. Overall, the IRS has seen a strong year for e-filing. Taxpayers filed more than 75 million returns electronically through April 17, shattering last year’s record of 73.2 million. E-file and Free File will remain available through Oct. 15, 2007, to taxpayers who have requested a six-month filing extension.
