  1. Done! I forgot that the "tips" topic was locked when it was originally started for Abby Normal 3 years ago, and I've unlocked it so anyone can post there now.
  2. For more info on a return's e-file rejection (note that Jack's response below related specifically to a dependent's SSN causing the reject)
  3. The instructions for line 4 of Form 8880 has a list of exceptions for those distributions that are not included on that line. The second to last item under "Don't include any of the following" is Distributions from an inherited IRA by a nonspousal beneficiary.
  4. That selection within Drake won't increase the size of the Client Manager that Deb is asking about, but it may help with choose forms to print in the print/view mode though.
  5. Each topic on this site has a unique web address that allows it to be saved as a bookmark in your browser. This gives users another way to keep and retrieve topics at a later date in addition to using the forum's search function or requesting that a topic be pinned. It is particularly useful for finding topics where the subject is less than 4 letters (ex: QBI) or where search results may bring up a lot of hits. Eventually I'll move this post to the "Help" section, but putting it in General Chat for a while first.

  6. I couldn't find a way from within the Drake program to make the Client Manager text larger, but I can do this by adjusting the Windows setting for scale. It will, however, make all of your icons and fonts larger, and you may not like that. It's easy enough to go back if you decide that a change in this setting isn't to your liking. An easy way to find this is while on the main Windows desktop, right click in a blank space that will bring up a popup box, and then click on "Display Settings" there. That will launch a page where display adjustments are made. The option you are looking for to change is under "Scale and Layout" that is probably set to 100% (recommended). If you adjust that to a higher percentage, your Client Manager within Drake should appear larger. It will also enlarge your desktop icons and text within other apps. You'll have to try this to see if it is bothersome in other programs.
  7. I separated out an existing pinned topic on ATX tips and tricks and added a quote from the latest post in there. That pinned topic now appears at the very top of General Chat.
  8. SHORTCUTS: Above quote was taken from this topic here: https://www.atxcommunity.com/topic/22308-are-there-atx-shortcuts-not-listed/
  9. How to search for shortcuts:
  10. Don't enter it on the return itself; add a column in the Return Manager for the email addy and/or phone #
  11. The question and checkbox aren't required to be answered unless Schedule 1 has information other than that on it. There's a lot more, but here is a snippet from the 1040 instructions for Sch 1:
  12. The official 2019 form 5695 on the IRS page does include those nonbusiness energy credits on page 2. I think this will be another case of the software vendors having to modify those forms for the changes made late in 2019. Another example of this is the 2018 Sch A on the IRS site that is back to "draft" status as of 1/21/2020 and now shows the PMI deduction line again that was "Reserved" and grayed out when we filed last year.
  13. From pub 526. Note that "best practices" at the bottom suggest that travel expenses should be paid through the donor organization but that not doing so does not preclude the deduction of expenses.
  14. Max W is stating the general rule for cash contributions, but there are other rules concerning contemporaneous records too, and there are instances where a receipt from the charity itself for certain expenditures may not be possible, just like in the OP's example of someone traveling for missionary work. The travel cost is clearly related to the charitable work, yet the funds were not paid to the charity itself where any substantiation could ever be obtained, yet the deduction is valid. A good summary is found here on the IRS site: https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/substantiating-charitable-contributions
  15. Yes, I have a similar notation that you are asking about. For the View/Print" : From the data entry mode screen, at the top left of those screens, click on "View/Print" button that is second from the left next to "Calculate". That brings up the return as calculated where you'll see the Messages and Notes pages with errors and other informational items to consider or that may require your attention. The list that JRS mentioned is on the messages page. I'm seeing a similar list on my messages page in my state returns for a few forms that are still in development status, and those returns do have that "do not file, client copy only" message across the top. Some I've seen also have a large diagonal watermark warning that the form isn't ready yet.
  16. One other problem I see with this - unless it's the taxpayer's minor child or a person that the taxpayer has a financial POA for, then your client will have no access to this other account to verify or solve anything if something does go wrong. Don't do it!
  17. There's nothing to stop you from trying this, but there are no "safety nets" that will prevent the financial institution from rejecting that part of the refund into an account that doesn't have the taxpayer's name on it. cbslee is right that the worst is that a paper check may be issued for that part, but do you want the hassle? We all know that even if you explain that risk to the client, that all the client will hear is "we can do it." Then, if that part of the refund bounces back to IRS, the client will call you to help find out what happened. I agree with Jack and Randall, and I'd try to discourage the client from trying this. Why can't he receive the full amount and then give the funds to the other person by other means? There are plenty of other very easy ways to transfer funds these days.

    Drake & Firefox

I've had no problems using Firefox for Drake.
  19. Welcome to our forum! This is an unofficial forum of ATX users that is not associated in any way with Wolters Kluwer, CCH, or its ATX division, so no one here will be able to provide an exact date for you. It is possible that the delay is with the state and beyond ATX' control. Even though a state may have forms available on its website, each software vendor must create and test each form's processing with that state, and receive approval from that state before the form can be moved from draft status to be available for filing.
  20. These problems have been known since the 1909 update was released in mid-November. I wonder why the big warning is only now being issued? It's shown in my update list since that time as "optional," and I definitely remember finding a lot of information back then about it possibly not installing correctly, the not booting up, file searching troubles, and graphics interface and driver issues that were causing icons to disappear or not function at all.

    1040-SR?

Some have speculated that it was in part to have a form with the standard deduction chart for those over 65 on the form itself instead of being directed to "see instructions," possibly to cut down on errors by those filling out paper returns.

Sandy, Titling a post with your username probably won't get much, if any, attention around here because most won't open it, especially from a new member. Your other post on this exact same topic was originally entitled "Sandy," and I retitled that to be more descriptive. It hasn't had any replies as yet, and I've included a link to it at the bottom of this post. In future, if you can't spot your post or activity, you can find all of it by clicking on your username at the upper right of the forum, then clicking "profile." Your profile page will show the most current posts and activity, and once you have enough activity to exceed the current view, then clicking on the "See my activity" will allow access to all of your activity. Here's your first post regarding the Paperless Plus:
