  1. This is on this IRS page, not directly on the FIRE site either:
  2. Good! I only have one return on hold so far for this because the client agreed to wait since this vote was coming up so soon.
  3. And sorry, I know that information doesn't help those of you that are waiting.
  4. You know, I'm not so sure that the delay really is with the IRS, but that is what ATX is telling its customers. Is it possible that ATX is simply slow to post the status of the filings? The reason I wonder this is because I submitted some clients' 1099s directly through the IRS FIRE system and some other clients' forms through an online service as late as the evening of 1/30, and all have been accepted. I got emails from IRS FIRE system and checked online at the site, and all are showing as "good, released", and I got emails from the online service showing all of those were accepted also.
  5. A quick trial and error got me almost exactly to the TT refund by using an IRA contribution of 10% of taxable wages. With the lower income and a $200 retirement savings credit, I come out to a refund of $3,055. A single person supporting themselves on $24K a year definitely has an extra $2K in reserve to contribute, right? Plus, the amount of FWT for that income is very inflated. Nice tricks by TT where the average person would never catch the deception!
  6. I'll bring the beer from Dogfish Head brewery because some may not fully appreciate scrapple. Or I could bring locally grown fancy mushrooms delicious when marinaded and grilled. We still have plenty of mushroom houses within driving distance.
  7. It's being discussed but I don't have a good feeling that there will be agreement between House and Senate, or the fact it's being mentioned to revisit the extenders later in the year. My own feeling is that if agreement isn't soon then it might just be dead in the water, because really, how long into this year can this go before deciding that making laws retroactive and applicable to 2017 is not acceptable. I tried to find a good nonpartisan article, if there is one, and this from Reuters is best I could come up with, but it talks more about industry-specific extenders and not the more generic ones like most of us here are probably waiting for: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-tax-extenders/house-republicans-to-scrutinize-narrow-extender-tax-breaks-idUSKBN1FQ394 If this post or the article seems too political for anyone, just hit the "report" function and I'll take it down.
  8. Lion, do you have a microphone that would convert voice to text? At least that might be easier and less time consuming. My fat fingered husband has trouble hitting the correct letters on his phone so he uses it for his texting, then goes back to make minor corrections where it misinterprets his words. OK, so I went back and looked at this client's stored data. In addition to the multitude of actual documents and summaries she supplied, after printing out and highlighting emails to glean out the data needed for the return out from all of the other questions and answers she required, I had 7+ full pages of email correspondence that I saved. That was after eliminating the extraneous stuff. I just gave myself a headache revisiting all of it again. Ugh, just doesn't seem overly efficient to me!
  9. I'm on board with the notion of keeping the clients out of the office and off the phone as much as possible and I *mostly* embrace the technology to do that. That being said, I have one client that thinks of emailing and texting as extended chat sessions and as a replacement to a sit-down meeting, expecting very detailed answers to her questions about how the tax law applies to her situations and variety of deductions, and will 20-question me to death...one question at a time. She got offended when I suggested that for expediency and efficiency, that I would appreciate if she could group all/most of her questions into fewer emails. Honestly, it was so annoying that I considered dropping her as a client because answering to her satisfaction was like teaching a course on tax preparation. All of that doesn't include the initial emails to send me documents and follow up email from her where I've requested missing information! Then she questioned my fee after having to wade through, organize, and e-store the 2 dozen or so emails to properly document all that was said. She made all of that even more difficult because she didn't keep a good flow of responding to the emails because she'd click reply to an earlier email after others of hers had come in and contained more information. Maybe ^ this client is the exception, but this was so ridiculous that I found it to be a very inefficient way to gather all of her data and review my tax prep work. My review of returns is a very thorough process, and I was particularly worried that I'd missed including some piece of data on her returns.
  10. Uh, some advance planning - we need a volunteer to drain the gas out of Rita's backhoe ahead of time. Sounds like fun though. I'd be there if I could.
  11. I can't speak for the official ATX board, but TTB is like some of those people are protective of their own little internet kingdom even when others give correct answers, or God forbid correct them when they are wrong.
  12. Oh no, you keep them over at ATX! Those are some of the *cough* (not) preparers that also NEED forms-based entry as a crutch and would tie up Drake's tech support when they can't figure out the entries because of their own shortcomings.
  13. Terry mentioned "remodel", and that term has specific application and requirements in the repair regs for retailers and restaurants, and then at the end of his post he also mentioned home office. I don't think that the term "remodel" in the repair regs can be applied to residential home offices, not directly in its application nor as a logical justification of similar deductions in other circumstances. First, it's a new structure that isn't in service at the end of 2017. Second, I think the entire capital costs of the structure should be accumulated and, when placed in service, depreciated by applying the business use % like would be for any other home office space. Then, weigh the actual costs including that depreciation against the safe harbor for home offices. The $5K from the Sch C sounds like nothing more than a draw and not any sort of deductible expense in 2017.

Before anyone else expends more time with answers, please note that this revived topic was started 10 months ago.
  15. Yes, Drake has it and will compute the IL SA form.
  16. Rich is correct. Sorry this post is long. This link is to Cornell Law for sec 1.401(k)-1(f) "Special rules for designated Roth contributions" and should have the references you are looking for. Bolding is mine, but be sure to read all of it :
  17. Yes, I know, and you are better off following the advice that rfassett gave you in the post this morning, as that advice came directly from the ATX support site.
  18. Sharon, be careful doing this since this is a four year old thread that you revived, and the advice given may or may not be appropriate now.
  19. Bloomberg projected that these workarounds could cost upwards of $154 billion in lost revenue to the U.S. Treasury. This could get messy.... To read more of the details, google "Bloomberg & State Tax Workarounds" and look for the article from 5 days ago.
  20. Good to know it wasn't any of our machines! Thank you, cbslee, for posting the reason. I also have the premium version of MBAM and when I saw its real-time protection was turned off, that my other AV software working overtime and that things were slowing up, I knew that something, or a conflict, was going on between the two of them so I shut off the MBAM to investigate. Luckily for me I wasn't working today, and once I rebooted the problem was being resolved with the Malwarebytes second/corrected updated.
  21. Correct, the policy number assigned by the marketplace that is shown on the 1095-A is not the same as the policy number used by the insurance company. At least that is the case with those here in my state.
  22. Maybe you should bypass ATX altogether and create and file the W-2 directly on the SSA site for free. Or, you could use one of the other online filing sites for a nominal fee.
  23. Terry, when you open up screen 2 "Dependents" it looks a little like a spreadsheet with entry boxes going across. To enter much more detailed information about a dependent beyond that first grid page, click on "Item Detail" at the bottom of that screen. Doing so will take you to another screen of much more detailed questions and check boxes related to the dependent, EITC, and HOH qualifiers. The "Additional Information" section located at the bottom left is where you indicate over 18 & disabled.
  24. Edsel, please note that in the bottom left corner of the "IDS" screen, there are boxes that can be checked that will allow the e-file to process if the states included in the return don't require the DL or state i.d. to be entered. One box indicates that the TP doesn't have a DL or i.d., and the second box is if the TP didn't provide one of those.
  25. Tax court is shut down so hand delivery of a petition is not an option at this time and neither is hand delivery of returns to IRS. The postmark date would be used to determine whether the taxpayer met the deadline in a timely manner.
