I wonder how much tax California is really missing considering not just the direct sales tax on the tomatoes and the income tax for the farmer and his workers, and the gasoline tax for hauling the tomatoes, but also the indirect tax that won't be received from income tax lost from the people in the stores who won't make quite as much money and the sales tax they won't be paying because they will buy less and on down the line. I wonder if anyone has ever made a study of how much total tax is paid all the way down the line on each dollar spent. I bet the amount would be astonishing. There also would be less repairs on the trucks and tractors that are used for harvesting and trucking the tomatoes and the trickle down effect.

Seems like someone on this board had a bet with an ATX salesman that ATX would extend the discount deadline and the ATX salesman said there is no way ATX would extend the deadline. Looks like the salesman lost the bet. Sic im!

If you want to carry it forward, you have to make the election to carry it forward.

<<Thank God that will never be passed.>> Don't be too sure. Osama, I mean Obama is doing all kinds of weird things lately.

I don't know. Anything I get from CCH gets deleted without being read. As for odd characters, I know there are some odd characters that run CCH.

<<Say every taxpayer receives a print out of the reported items and facts on file with the IRS, if the taxpayer agrees, check the box and it is over.>> The majority of taxpayers would love this idea. They would feel that they wouldn't have to report the income that isn't on the IRS records.

The latest release I have for 2002 is 4.1.2003 but I'm not sure about how to make a copy. Can you just copy it to the hard disk and then back to a blank cd, or is there something special you have to do to copy a program file? I'll be glad to mail you a copy. Gene

I took the original post to mean W2 wages. Obviously with businesses, net income would have to be determined. I feel that sole proprietors should pay a flat tax on their NET income, partners pay on their share of profits, and of course corporation officers and employees receive W2s. Yes, a LOT of changes would have to be made. And of course, accountants and tax preparers would still be needed, but a lot of us who receive a large part of our income from simple returns would be out of work.

God has the perfect system. He says "give me 10% of what you make", no matter how little or how much. Our government trys to be more fair than God and has made a big mess of it. The fairest way of all would be to determine what percentage is needed and charge a flat rate. No deductions, no exemptions, no nothin. Of course that would put us out of a job, but that would be the fairest way of all.

I saw a "yellow page ad renewal notice" the other day. They aren't dead yet.

I have seen numerous letters from a company here in Alabama warning employers of fines they will be charged if they don't have certain posters posted in their work places informing employees of their unemployment rights. They offer to provide the posters for a price, but the posters can be obtained from the Department of Industrial Relations at no charge. Whenever one of my clients call be about it, I tell them to throw the letter in the trash can.

AMT for 18 year old first time filer earning $3283
GeneInAlabama replied to GeneInAlabama's topic in General Chat
Thanks Cathy, I added back the 6251 and everything is like it is supposed to be now. I can check and uncheck the status box and the AMT appears and disappears like it should. Now, as I type this message, the letters quit showing up as I type, and then all of a sudden they will appear all at once. Something seems to be going on with my computer. Thanks for your help. AMT for 18 year old first time filer earning $3283
GeneInAlabama replied to GeneInAlabama's topic in General Chat
I'm glad that it's not just my computer. Or, maybe your computer has the swine flu too! Did the AMT change when you added the filing status. I think at the beginning, I didn't check the filing status, but when I went back and checked it, the AMT was still there. I wonder if not checking the filing status at the very beginning could have anything to do with it? -

AMT for 18 year old first time filer earning $3283

Lion, according to the worksheet, the AMT exemption for a dependent is $6,400. I prepare VERY few returns that have AMT and each time I do, I have to struggle through the 6251 line by line. I prepared the return on Tax Wise and it didn't charge AMT. (I originally purchased the $299 TRX program, but when they substituted the Tax Wise program, I tried it and didn't like it, so I bit the bullet and purchased the ATX Max program. I bought the ATX TRX program for next year and hope it doesn't get substituted again.) -
AMT for 18 year old first time filer earning $3283
GeneInAlabama replied to GeneInAlabama's topic in General Chat
In Alabama, both the parent and the dependent can claim the personal exemption. It is a small perk the state gives us, but it doesn't amount to that much. The parent can claim $1,000 for depencents and the the dependent can claim $1,500 on his own return as a personal exemption. Until a year or two ago, the parent could only claim $300 for each child. The Alabama return is totally separate from the federal. You can file one and not have to file the other. -
AMT for 18 year old first time filer earning $3283

That's why I couldn't understand why the Alabama return showed no tax due but showed taxable income. Of course, when I did an override and put in the standard deduction and personal exemption, he had a negative taxable income. I don't know why I had to do an override. Weird things are happening today. Maybe I need to go back to bed. -
I am filing a return for an 18 year old first time filer who is a dependent. The program is trying to charge him $900 AMT!!! I updated my forms and still get the same results. I closed the program and reopened and still get the same results. I deleted the 6251 and everything is OK now, but why was it figuring the tax? I went through all the worksheets line by line the best my befuddled mind could do and information seemed to be carrying over to where it should except the final result HAS to be wrong. There is no way an 18 year old kid with that amount of W2 wages and no other income except $210 social security could owe AMT. I know tax law doesn't always make sense, but this is ridiculous. Also, on the same return the state is showing $3,031 taxable income but no tax due. He is getting a full refund on the state. Maybe my computer has gotten the swine flu.

Medlin Payroll does everything but the 1099s. $45 per year.

If Medlin has a 1099 program that will efile, that would be great. Let us know if you find out anything on that.
