  1. I just made a rule that there would be no filing of dependents' returns until parent returns cleared!
  2. I have never been able to get the bulk disposition function to work properly. Some day during the off season, I'm going to have to read the directions/help instructions and try to figure it out.
  3. Somehow, in looking at a dependent return from several angles, I toggled to have her claim herself (made NO difference on her return as only tax was self-employment tax on a small stipend). I didn't catch it, nor did my reviewer. The kids return was accepted (aaargh) and parents' just rejected. Now I get to tell the parents I'm an idiot, file an amended return for the kid, and wait to file the parents. Although my 'mess up' list is long and distinguished, I have never pulled this ridiculous stunt before.
  4. I would include the education expenses on Mom's return. I believe tuition paid with UTMA accounts is treated like Student Loans and can go on the return of the person claiming the dependent. This is from Pub 17: Who can claim a dependent's expenses. If an exemption is allowed for any person who claims the student as a dependent, all qualified education expenses of the student are treated as having been paid by that person. Therefore, only that person can claim an education credit for the student. If a student is not claimed as a dependent on another person's tax return, only the student can claim a credit. Expenses paid by a third party. Qualified education expenses paid on behalf of the student by someone other than the student (such as a relative) are treated as paid by the student. However, qualified education expenses paid (or treated as paid) by a student who is claimed as a dependent on your tax return are treated as paid by you. Therefore, you are treated as having paid expenses that were paid by the third party. For more information and an example, see Who Can Claim a Dependent's Expenses in Pub. 970, chapter 2 or 3. ************ To me, the only verification would be that the parent contributed more than 50% of the total support, which you have already verified.
  5. On Line 52, enter the MRD that should have been taken. On Line 53 (if you use ATX), click on the arrow, and it will take you to a waiver explanation. Enter the full amount that should have been taken, and enter you explanation in the blue box.
  6. I agree. On the 5329, there is a way to waive the penalty and assume that the IRS will agree. I have always filed this way, with the return and not separately, and I have never had it questioned.
  7. Wow. I have really long hair, and I regularly send a 12 inch bunch to an organization that makes wigs for children. I have a tax practice, so I think about deductions often, and it never even occurred to me to consider deducting the cost of the haircut. Eeegads.
  8. I appreciate the reminder. Just made mine, and it took less than 60 seconds, start to finish. I can't believe I don't think about this until someone reminds me. Grrrr. I apologize, Eric!
  9. How did they manage to negotiate the check? I agree to treat it as KC suggests, but I am surprised that they did not have to reopen the estate to negotiate the check if it was made payable to the estate. The bank must not have been paying attention. Very lucky!
  10. I would say it's property settlement and not deductible. The QDRO could have been amended or redone.
  11. I do not know what your guy does, but if he owns 34% of the S-Corp, how can he "not have a substantial investment in the equipment and property used to perform the service"? I have absolutely no experience - just wondering.
  12. Some days you're the windshield; some days you're the bug.
  13. It has to be a charity that the individual whose return you are working on donated to in the previous year requiring a 2014 8283. This is how mine is working, any way. It's not terribly helpful given those parameters.
  14. Thank you! Saves time on hold.
  15. I follow the policy Jack suggested.
  16. As long as you are researching the issues thoroughly, why not take this chance to learn? You've got support from this Board and some good publications. You are conscientious enough that you will do a good job for your clients.
  17. Thanks, Catherine! I truly would have never figured that out!
  18. This client must live next door to Goodwill. I have not seen this many Goodwill receipts in a month's worth of tax returns. They total over $500, but most are $12, $15, etc. How do you put it that emoticon that bangs its head with a book? I wish to start a petition to do away with this form. Aaaaargh.
  19. Put the amount rolled over in the box right under 2a that says 'Rollover amount included in 2a'. This should take it out of taxable income and put 'rollover' on the front of the 1040 next to line 15a. The 1099 is issued correctly. I'm assuming you are using ATX with this answer.
  20. Thanks, all! After hours on the phone with tech support and letting them take over the computer, someone else called in with the same issue. It turns out that it is something that went wonky with the last update and has to do with Kansas Estimated Payment Vouchers. They are working on a fix. Right now, I can print as long as I suppress printing on estimated vouchers. Eeegads. Thanks so much to everyone for offering help!
  21. It appears to be returns that we have rolled over since the update yesterday.
  22. Help! I cannot print . . . at all! This started last night when I went to print a return I had just finished. I had printed others earlier in the day. I get a red error message that says 'did not print successfully. there was an error printing the document'. It did print a few pages and then stopped. I restarted the software, restarted the computer, tried 3 different printers and .pdf, and tried other workstations. ATX first solution (from tech support after almost one hour hold) did not work. Called my tech guy, and after he worked on it, he said it's an ATX issue. All other programs printing fine. On hold again (forever) for tech support. Anyone faced this? I'm trying to stay calm and keep my hair on, but if I can't print or .pdf . . . Thanks in advance.
  23. I've gotten this down to a handful of clients (in large part thanks to my very convincing staff), and I make those who still want to come give me an itemized litany bring me lunch or a latte. I've received both this week! Somehow, it makes it much easier to sit through.
  24. Vanguard won't issue a new 1099 (if they do, someone's a better talker than me). 1041.
  25. Sorry - I was bumping this for Pacun because he posted that he was looking for it, and I don't know how to simply link to it.
