That at least narrows things down a bit. I'll see if I can download the AOL browser and duplicate the problem.

So if you were to close the browser, and then re-open it, and come back to www.atxcommunity.com, it would ask for you to login again? (can you test that for me?) You could also try deleting the cookie and clearing your browser cache, and then try logging in again to see if that fixes it.

I never noticed this thread when it was posted. I think the best way to do this here would be to create a "Files" forum. All topics in that forum could be used for posting attachments that would be useful to others. You could even send the files to me, and I could post them up so it doesn't use up your attachment space. Tags/Keywords could be added to the topics so that they can be found more easily using the forum's search function.

This was brought up once before: http://www.atxcommunity.com/index.php?showtopic=97

Here is the forum Help, which can be searched: http://www.atxcommunity.com/index.php?act=Help for BB Code, there is a button labeled "BB Code Help" when replying.. this tells you how to use the BB Code markup, although it's not usually necessary to manually type it. The editor buttons at the top do an alright of generating the BB Code for you. (you can highlight some text and hit the "b" button, and it'll add the BB Code to make that text bold) If you want to test out the features and make some test posts, you're welcome to do that in the Website Discussion forum. Go ahead and create a new topic called "Test" and mess around with the features to get to learn them. You can't break anything, so don't worry about making a mess.. just keep it in the Website Discussion forum. If you still have questions after tinkering with the features, ask in the Website Discussion forum, and I'll do my best to answer them.

Let windows manage your virtual memory: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click the System icon. 3. In the System Properties window, click the Performance tab. 4. Under Advanced settings, click Virtual Memory. 5. In the Virtual Memory box, verify that the Let Windows Manage my Virtual Memory Settings check box is selected. Above steps taken from the following ATX Knowledgebase document: http://techkb.atxforms.com/TSTKB.nsf/0/31d...09?OpenDocument Also, you'll want to make sure you have plenty of free hard drive space. If you're running low on hard drive space, Windows can't expand the size of your page file (virtual memory). If you've got an older computer, you may want to consider adding RAM (actual memory) so that it can be utilized instead of virtual memory. (using virtual memory is much slower)

Possible Setup for site...open for comments too!
Eric replied to Gordy from NM's topic in Website Help
Changing the board layout in the middle of tax season may not be a welcome change, even if it is beneficial. Duplicate posts in different areas (cross posting) clutters things up and makes it difficult to follow the discussion. When I catch it, I'll combine them into one thread, replies and all. The Community is defined by the people and personalities that make it up, not the software we use to do our jobs. Besides, even if I did want to keep non-ATXers out, I have no way to verify who are ATX customers and who are not. -

It's very easy for me to organize things any way you guys like.. the hard part is coming to a consensus. So you guys discuss it, and then we can put up a poll and vote. :D -
Once it's uploaded, it'll show up in that little drop down list (Manage Current Attachments) in the upload section (for that post only) Click the drop down list, and then click that little-paper-with-green-plus-sign icon to insert the attachment into your post. It'll look like this: To delete the attachment, use the little-paper-with-red-x icon.

Wrong? yes. Surprising? no.

I am almost positive that the old ATX Community is incompatible with the infrastructure that this site is running on. Technologically speaking, everything is most likely different from server operating system and software, to the database engine used. The easiest solution would be for them to at least allow customers to access the archive. I don't think that's very likely. Another possibility that wouldn't require them to host anything, would be that they provide a static copy of the archive in plain HTML (no database) that I could host here. That's probably even less likely. I guess it doesn't hurt to ask, though. :)

XLS uploads are now allowed. Here's the list images: bmp, gif, ico, jpeg, jpg, png, tiff documents: doc, htm, html, pdf, rtf, txt, xls media: mp3, wav

Here is the thread he's talking about: http://www.atxcommunity.com/index.php?showtopic=34 I'd like to thank everyone for their donations. With such a generous group of members, I don't think we'll have any trouble keeping this community going (and growing). ^_^

I've enabled the file uploads. Here's how it works: 1. Every person on the forum gets 1mb (1024KB) of storage space to use. 2. You can upload as many files as you want until you hit the 1mb limit. 3. You can only post the attachment once. It wont be available to post in other threads. This seems to be a limitation of the software. 4. If you've run out of space and need to attach a new file, you'll have to delete some of your files to make room for new ones. You can do this through your control panel under Options > Manage Your Attachments 5. Only certain types of files are allowed. Right now XLS files are not allowed, but I will change this. If there are any file types that aren't allowed but would be helpful, let me know. This attachment system works when posting and private messaging.

It's probably mosquito larva. I hear tadpoles will take care of that.

The quote shows that you are replying to that specific post. If you just want to make a general reply in the thread rather than to a specific comment, you can do what mchampine said above, or you can scroll to the bottom and use the Fast Reply or Add Reply buttons. Here's what they look like: More about those buttons here: http://www.atxcommunity.com/index.php?showtopic=43

As far as I know, there is no way to arrange the posts in a thread in reverse order. One problem with such a layout would be that you would end up reading conversations backwards. (reading responses before questions as you scrolled down through the page) If you look at the list of threads, though, there is a little button that you can click that will take you to the first unread message for that thread. The button looks like this: So, for example, you read a thread with 5 posts. You come back the next day and there are now 10 posts. Click that little image, and it'll bring you to the thread right to post number 6 so you can start reading where you left off.

If you don't need anything too fancy, and don't care to have your own domain name, google offers a nice (and free) service to those with a gmail account. It's called the Google Page Creator If anyone interested, I can send you an invite for a gmail account. You use the same username and password to log into the google page creator, and you do your editing with a simple WYSIWYG web based editor. Your website address would be http://username.googlepages.com

Sorry for not responding sooner.. i did see the thread, and I've been tinkering. If anyone else still has this problem, let me know

The hosting package doesn't have a lot of extra storage space, but I'll enable the uploads and put a smallish limit on file size. You should see the Attachment features turned on sometime today.

If the problem really is Windows Vista, you might want to try using your ATX software in compatibility mode. To use compatibility mode in Windows Vista: 1. Open Windows Explorer. 2. Locate the application executable. 3. Right click the executable and click the Properties option. 4. Select the Compatibility tab. 5. Select the Run This Program in Compatibility Mode option. 6. From the drop-down list, choose the operating system you ran before upgrading to Vista. 7. If necessary, select the option to run the program as an administrator. 8. Click OK.

It shows up when people view your profile. What you may be looking for is the Avatar, which appears under your name when you post.

At the bottom of each individual post, there is a Quote and a Reply button. The Quote button is useful when you want to quote multiple posts in one reply. You can turn it red at the bottom of a bunch of posts, and then when you go to make your reply, you'll see them all quoted in the text box so you can respond to each one. The Reply button just brings you to the reply screen to quote a single post. From here you can erase the quote text before you reply. or Instead of using the reply/quote buttons at the bottom of each post, scroll to the bottom of the thread and use the Fast Reply or Add Reply buttons. Fast Reply - toggles a reply box at the bottom of the thread which you can immediately type in - no automatic quoting - only basic editor options - Considered "fast" because it doesn't require that you load a new page to start replying. Add Reply - takes you to the reply screen - only adds quotes if you toggled any of those red Quote buttons at the bottom of someone's posts - full featured editor (can change fonts, font sizes, colors, text alignment, etc) - brings you to a new page to start the reply

Roughly the price of a 12 pack of Sam Adams, give or take a few bucks? If you would rather have an idea of the costs of running the site, here's a breakdown: $150 initial software cost, $25 renewal fee every 6 months $35 initial hosting setup fee, $15 per month. This could change if the site grows to be a lot more active than it is right now. $10 per year for atxcommunity.com domain name. Thanks!
