  2. Honestly, I can't understand how people can get excited enough over the two major candidates in this election to buy bumper stickers and put signs on their lawn. I still haven't decided who I'm voting for. In the past, I've voted Libertarian, but am leaning more toward the Constitution Party candidate this time around. I'm one of those crazy people who is all about personal AND economic freedom, which apparently has become quite rare--we're expected to choose between the two. I wont go into any detail about my political views right now though.. those discussions always seem to get noisy, and I don't want to derail Monkeyman's thread. (feel free to start a new one, though)
  3. I hear VMS recently got a fairly large contract and might be hiring, is that true? My brother may be applying for job there.

I've added the extra question to the registration form. Do you think that the wording above is clear enough?

I just thought of an additional method to keep out automated spam bots, and possibly even human spammers from other countries. I could add a question to the forum's registration form, such as "What four digit number is associated with the federal individual income tax form?" People registering for this forum wouldn't have any trouble getting the answer right, but automated bots wouldn't know what to put there.

A group of people in Russia have released a new version of their software which allows spammers to bypass spam protections in all kinds of websites.. even Google and Microsoft's spam protections have been cracked. This allows an automated process to go and register for forums and blogs and email accounts to spread enormous amounts of garbage very quickly. I've banned 9 IP address ranges and a few e-mail domains which has blocked many, but not all of them. The company who makes the forum software has released an update tonight that will hopefully fix the mess, which I will install tomorrow. Not sure if it'll do the trick or not, we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm sorry about all of the trouble we're having with spam at the moment, and wanted to let you all know that it's not limited to us. Many other forums and blogs are having the same trouble right now. I'm going to shut the forum down for a couple hours tomorrow to make a few changes. After that, unfortunately, I'll be gone for the weekend without much in the way of internet access. I'm thinking about suspending new forum registrations during that time to keep the filth out... what do you folks think?
  8. Any topic that hasn't had any replies in 30 days is removed from the board index, but remains in the database and must be retrieved with a search.

Google.com showing up just means that Google is crawling/indexing the site to show in their search results. We had a bunch of spammers / spam bots register today, but I think they've been all taken care of now.
  10. I deleted every user that registered today. I hope we didn't have any legit registrations, but things were getting out of hand. I've also patched some of the SPAM protections and enabled some other security features. Hopefully that keeps the bots out... I'll be watching tomorrow morning to make sure the changes did the trick.
  11. Looks like I'll be shutting down the forum for a little bit to clean up the mess and patch the forum's CAPTCHA feature. Sorry for the short notice!
  12. I've recently learned through the joke that is our presidential election that they make pig lipstick and pitbull lipstick. I was, however, not aware of modem lipstick.
  13. If you have the same problems across all computers, wired and wireless alike, your suspicions may be correct. It might also be a failing DSL modem, failing router, or a damaged/noisy phone line.
  14. Also, there are a bunch of different software packages for Windows emulation on a Mac. My personal favorite is Parallels. This video demonstrates Coherence Mode, which is a great feature: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN9jNNeEd98 I haven't got any sound on this computer, so I apologize in advance if this video features obnoxious music instead of useful narration.
  15. Under the box where you write your post, there is a section called "Attachment Editor" Using the controls on the right, browse to the file you wish to attach and hit the Upload button. This puts your file into your attachment space, which is like a library of the files you've uploaded. Once your file is in your attachment space, you can use the drop-down-box on the right labeled "Manage Current Attachments" to insert a link to the file into your post, or to delete a previously uploaded attachment.
  16. There's nothing special about Apple hardware, except that it's pretty. My personal feeling is that if you want to use the OS X operating system, buy a Mac. If you don't, you're probably better off saving some money and buying a PC... unless the aesthetic style of the Mac hardware is worth the price difference to you.
  17. If Microsoft were to continue to fix Vista for 7 years as they did for XP, then I'm sure it could reach XP's level of stability. One issue with (32bit) XP is that it's only going to recognize a maximum of 3.5GB of RAM.
  18. I'm pretty sure the leader's name/nickname was Hannibal, and then the other guy was Murdock. I don't know if the van had a name, but it was awesome.
  19. Sorry for taking so long to respond.. The grand total (with three hard drives) was less than $850. This does not include monitors, keyboard, mouse, operating system.. I already had all of these. With only a single 250GB hard drive, the price would be closer to $720. With a single 500GB hard drive, the price would be around $830. I figured that although not everyone is interested in putting together their own computer, they might be able to benefit from the research I put into picking the parts. (I'm picky about nerdy stuff like this) Also, if you give someone a nice shopping list of parts with prices, you're probably less likely to be overcharged for the system. (it shouldn't take more than a couple hours to put together the computer and maybe another half an hour to install the operating system)
  20. This whole thread reminds me of a demotivational poster I just purchased for my office:
  21. I recently built myself a new workstation machine. I'm not sure if this will come in handy, but here's the parts list: Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811112158 Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817341012 Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128344 Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115017 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231122 Video Card (nothing special, but fine for a workstation. Went with this over the 8400GS because this doesn’t require a fan) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150255 CD/DVD Burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827151154 Hard Drives: (three of these) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822148262
  22. That description sounds like the web browser isn't loading the style sheets for the site. I would clear my cache and reload the page. The page should look about the same in Firefox, Opera, Safari, and other mostly standards compliant browsers (and even Internet Explorer should be able render it correctly) If clearing the cache doesn't help, I'd like to see a screenshot if possible.

I'm not saying you're old or anything but... no, I don't remember any of this :P
  24. It's been about 8 years since I've used Eudora so I can't really make any comparisons, but I do remember hearing that Qualcomm was creating a Eudorafied version of Thunderbird called Penelope. EDIT: Actually, it's a Thunderbird extension called Penelope. Links: http://wiki.mozilla.org/Penelope https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/4772
  25. Republicans had a chance to have a real conservative candidate in this election, and his name was Ron Paul. The problem is that the Republican party is no longer conservative. A humble foreign policy is no longer part of their platform. Many republicans who spend their time watching/listening to talking heads instead of thinking for themselves don't seem to realize that having the US military deployed in 135 countries is the antithesis of conservatism. At any rate, there already is a -real- conservative party. The Libertarian party is the third largest political party in the US, and was formed in 1971. They're a bunch of crazy people who think we should have both personal freedom AND economic freedom, and not have to choose one over the other. Imagine that?
