The search function will find any posts no matter what forum they're in. After the major software issues subside, I'll likely remove the forum and move all of the threads back to General Chat.

Yep, not a bad idea. Hopefully a temporary solution to a temporary problem.
-
Yep! That's a relief, I thought something was wonky.

Are you saying that when you use the quick reply at the bottom of a thread, you don't get the whole toolbar by default? You have to actually click the little button to show the toolbar?

You might not care about the details, but what's under the hood is what determines how well it works. When I worked in QA (Quality Assurance/Testing, 10 years ago?) We tested on a range of different hardware and operating systems to ensure compatibility. cnccpas is correct, the problems are too obvious. They likely shipped it with known issues to make a deadline.

The technology needed to change 10 years ago, but it's an awful job to tackle, and it's just easier not to do it. Access 97 was not the best solution 15 years ago either, but it's easy to work with in Visual Basic. There are countless alternatives to choose from for database engines, if that truly is the bottleneck. Some of those database engines are even free, like the one used to run this website, which has a database schema likely more complex than ATX's and hit harder, consistently serving 6700 page views per hour at peak times without flinching. And that's by not an impressive figure relative to other websites, but this forum software runs on a server with dozens of other busy sites, all on hardware that's not all that much different from your mid-high end desktop workstation.

cnccpas: thank you for the informative post, but it's not necessary to cross-post it in every thread. Thanks.

I expected a similar story in the Pacun's thread "Liquidated damages" but was sorely disappointed. -
Yup, click the Smiley face icon on the top row in the editor. (It opens a little bar at the bottom of the editor for you to choose an emoticon)

I didn't realize that either. I urge you to use the Report feature, it's a link under every post, to the left of the Quote buttons. EDIT: He's been flagged as a spammer, and can no longer post on the forums. Also, I just realized I wasn't getting notifications when posts/members were reported. I've fixed that too.

I hadn't noticed the thread. I have no opinion either, but let me know if the posts start to become annoying. If you guys think I should regard them as spam, I'll start the banning/deleting.

I'm kind of surprised we haven't seen people from other software vendors registering here.

Disabled Anti-Virus and Things Improved Dramatically

I'd be curious to know if Microsoft Security Essentials interferes with the software as well. Avast is great software, but it would be nice to have some form of protection running until you can turn Avast back on. -
I use Google Drive to store tons of documents and files. The folder on my computer automatically syncs, and when I'm done working with those files at work, they're available on all of my android devices and my home office computer, all up to date. It can be a handy way to get files (especially larger ones that might be too big to email) from one computer to another if they're not on the network, or with other people who need access to the same documents. DropBox is the other popular service that does pretty much the same thing. Both have apps for Android and iOS devices. The advantage of Google Drive is when you're working with text/spreadsheet documents in a collaborative way with other people. You can both edit the same document at the same time, and see all of the edits taking place live. The web based document editors aren't nearly as full featured as MS Office, but it works great for basic document editing. If you're paranoid about storing your data up on the "cloud", well, Idunno. Most of my files aren't sensitive enough for me to care about Google/DropBox having access to my sensitive data. I'm sure there are other services out there that support encryption.

Having worked in QA for most of my time at ATX and TaxWare*, I can not imagine working on a project for THREE YEARS and being so unprepared for the release, with such obvious stability and performance issues. I only assumed they did the whole conversion in a single year because of how badly things have been going. I guess they were a little too quick to get rid of most of the talent at ATX. *Taxware is the company that purchased the Sales and Use tax software "TaxSolver" when ATX was acquired by UCG.

In my opinion, they should have taken more than one year to make such a drastic change. The Excel format (actually, it's an Excel clone, the spreadsheet control was purchased and further developed internally) might be outdated, Idunno, I think that's debateable. I wouldn't consider it to have been on the brink of uselessness this year. Even back in 2000 when I began working there, I thought Access was a terrible choice for data storage. When I think of Microsoft Access, I think of simple DIY databases for personal use. ATX was using MSDE, based on Microsoft SQL Server to power their Sales and Use Tax Software, which was much more robust.

When you post a reply, there is a button below the editor labeled "More Reply Options" You'll be taken to a new page with more options. One of those options is under the editor, called "Attach Files" But as far as including things like YouTube videos, Rita is right, you just paste the URL for the YouTube video, and usually the forum handles the rest automagically. For example, pasting this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oHWvFrpocY Results in this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oHWvFrpocY

Hi Ron, I'll replace this thread with a new one soon with more up-to-date screenshots.

Last week we went from high 40s (above zero!) -20 in the span of a few days. Tonight it's supposed to be -22, or with the wind chill factored in, -43

There was also an easter egg in one of the older programs, but I can't remember how to access it. It had to do with holding shift or control and clicking something specific in the About dialog box. If I were to guess the year, I'd guess around 2002, give or take a couple years. It'd bring up a black window with stars flying by, and the names of the employees displayed in rainbow colored Comic Sans font. It was quite cheesy. I think it showed that one of the developers had way too much time on his hands.

Windows 8 is quite stable, but the UI (in my opinion) is just awful for desktop computing. At this point, it's hard to tell if you're having trouble installing/running your software because of Windows 8, or because of the ATX software glitches... or maybe a combination of both. Assuming you get the software issues out of the way, you'll still have to deal with all of the windows 8 interface changes. If I had to get work done on a desktop computer running Windows 8, I'd buy something like this: http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/ $5 is a small price to pay to keep your sanity.

Ooh, that's good stuff. I better start taking notes.

And here I thought my alteration of the Jump To Bunny was unappreciated. I'm glad to know I've served as an inspiration.
