Catherine, Michael, other NORTHEAST MEMBERS, are you OK?
Eric replied to kcjenkins's topic in General Chat
We've got some family downstate without power, but they're doing fine with their generator. This far north it's been too cold for freezing rain. Just lots and lots of snow. -
DC added!

Wouldn't it make sense to prompt the user to create a username and password the first time the security function is enabled? Is there some notification of the default username and password when the feature is enabled? It'd be careless to allow such a feature to be enabled with an unknown default, making the customer search though documentation to find it. And by careless, I mean by provoking unnecessary calls to support.

Haha, I wouldn't touch that website for a billion dollars. My sanity is worth a lot.

I just updated the forum template to include State field from your profile under your avatar, so now it's searchable through the Member Search, and also clearly visible on your posts.
-
I've removed the "Location" profile field and put in place one for "State" which is a drop-down where you have to choose a state abbreviation. It is a required profile field and must be filled in for new member registrations. Making it a drop-down field instead of a free text box will make it much easier (and more reliable) to search in the Member profiles. Please click here to edit your profile information. Select your state near the bottom of the page.

Excellent, glad to hear it. Thank you. I'm not going to complain--I'm just glad that they're putting real effort into improving standards compliance. If only they'd consider making improvements gradually that are quietly released over time instead of saving them for major version releases that go mostly ignored.

Yes, please let me know. If it's still an issue, I'd appreciate a screenshot to show what the editor looks like on the affected machine(s). A quick note, just in case. You can disable the rich text editor with a light switch button at the top left. Also, with the rich text editor enabled, there's a button on the right (small black arrow) that allows you to minimize the editor buttons.

A few security issues have been patched, but there continues to be compatibility issues with Internet Explorer 11. I have added a couple of dirty hacks that will mostly resolve the problems until 3rd party libraries are updated to fix things properly. Two of the most commonly reported issues were with Quoting posts and Pasting content into the editor. If you're using Internet Explorer 11, clear your cache, and refresh the page. You should now be able to at least do those two things without issue. For whatever reason, it took me a couple of tries and a few refreshes. If you need help clearing your cache, check this link for instructions. It's for IE 9 and 10, but 11 is pretty much the same. http://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=15141

I've got some maintenance to do on the forum to fix a couple of issues. I'll bring the site down a little later today, but I'm hoping it won't take too long. Thanks for your patience!

Should I downgrade my PC to Window 7 Professional
Eric replied to Naveen Mohan from New York's topic in General Chat
I've never been a fan of upgrading Windows from one version to another. I always feel like it's unclean--Windows upgrades are always so major and so far between, I guess I just don't trust Microsoft to get it right. I'd be a lot more comfortable with small/cheap incremental upgrades over time like Apple does, and like Microsoft has with 8 to 8.1. I don't know of any other function that requires the command line in Windows 8 that didn't in Windows 7. I guess I didn't notice this one because I only have one network profile on all of my Windows 8 computers (three desktops). Is that even the case with wireless networks? -

I agree with Taxed. Windows 8 is very similar to Windows 7. It might not feel that way because of the changes to the interface, but at it's core, it's pretty much all incremental improvements. External device drivers (printers/scanners) are most likely going to be your biggest concern. If you can get used to a Start Screen instead of a Start Menu, then you're at least 80% of the way to being totally comfortable with Windows 8.1. As far as software compatibility goes (besides drivers), I can't imagine that there would be issues for ATX software, but you never know I guess. Depending on the company, what OS they officially support might be just as important as what actually works. Software might work just fine with a particular version of Windows, but if it's not "officially" supported by the company, it's too easy for tech support to just say "sorry, you're on your own" EDIT: As far as going back to Windows 7 from 8, I don't know if it's possible, but if it is, I'd be scared about it being a flaky process. That's just my nerd intuition, though, nothing scientific. -
It's not a problem I have encountered. Multiple PDFs open in multiple windows for me. No crashing or rebooting. You might consider checking to see if you have the latest version or uninstalling/reinstalling the software.

And if you require an interview method presented by an animated cartoon character? I wonder whose idea Maxwell was. Probably Glynn's.

Those people are evil. Get used to disappointment, kid, your family sucks.

This is why Amazon Prime is totally worth it. I avoid people whenever possible.

My parents were 6 and 8 years old... you old farts.

My condolences to any loved ones working retail on Black Friday. I've never had the opportunity to experience such a hell, but I have heard stories.

When I explain what's going on with the site, hosting changes, things like that, it's not because I'm looking for donations. Seriously, I just want to keep you folks informed like I do all of my clients. Thank you though, the donations are appreciated. I'll use them to pay for the next big forum upgrade (version 4.0) which looks like it'll be released soon at the rate they're teasing about new features.

Hey, we've already had one round of donations, cut it out

This site has been moved to a new server. It *should* have taken 15 minutes, but due to the nature of how the internets work (specifically DNS propagation) it's possible that a few users with sub-par ISPs are still looking at the old site. I shut down the site on the old server about 10 minutes after the switch began, and so it's possible that there is a missing thread or a couple missing posts. Anyone who sees this thread: You're looking at the new site. I doubt there are any still looking at the old site, but just in case, I shut down the old site and put up a note with my contact info and an explanation of why their ISP is dumb.

Intuit needs to fix Intuit Tax Online. Forcing people to use outdated web browsers holds back innovation on the web, and leaves customers open to attack through un-patched software vulnerabilities. There is no excuse for it, especially for a software company with the development resources that Intuit has.
